Isotiles ®

An innovative maths resource for teachers.

ISOTILES® have been specifically designed by Maths experts to meet the attainment targets of the UK National Curriculum Key Stages 1, 2 and 3 and other recognised International Educational Systems. Registered with Curriculum Online and the National Grid for Learning, they can be used by children of all ability levels, including Special Needs. Their core use is in relation to the understanding of shape, tessellation and geometry, although they can be applied to many more mathematical concepts.

ISOTILES® can be used to teach: Types of angles, Lines & Angles, The angles of a triangle, Isosceles triangles, Similar triangles, Parallel lines & angles, Trapeziums, Parallelograms, Rhombuses, Kites & arrowheads, Pentagons, Hexagons, Heptagons, Octagons, Nonagons, Decagons, Sums of angles of polygons, Reflective symmetry, Rotational symmetry and Tessellations.

ISOTILES® are two triangular shapes; one isosceles and one equilateral in two colours of durable plastic, with their relationship based on the 'Golden Ratio' which was known to the ancients, and was documented by Euclid in the 3rd Century BC. The Golden Ratio is the most significant irrational number after pi. Its value (to the first 10 decimal places) is 1.6180339887...and its property is best described as a simple geometrical relationship, which you can explore using ISOTILES®.

The dimensions of the ISOTILES® are (approximately) 5cm and 8cm, with a thickness of 3mm. A 65 page Work Book covering tessellation and geometry topics and including teacher's notes and student exercises is also supplied on a CD ROM. Sets include an equal number of the yellow and blue colours, with 10 acute and 10 obtuse tiles in a box. The Overhead Projector set is moulded in translucent plastic.

A choice of 5 ISOTILES® options allow children of all ages to explore the 'Golden Ratio', tessellations, shapes and geometry, and to create, investigate, analyse, calculate and reach their own conclusions. They can also be used for Design and Technology.
